Gives direction to the entire organization and is used to establish goals and objectives to reach the dreams. Picture it as going on a new and long trip, with the business plan being your road map on how to get there.

The budget takes the organization’s business plan and estimates the expense of the resources necessary to meet the plan. Likewise, the budget puts revenue numbers to expected quantity sales. And what’s left is investment or profit.

Feedback loops within the organization start with the Business Plan implementation goals and objectives (a pro forma view). As the business functions and decisions are made, the loops provide decision-makers with information about the results of decisions made in the past (a historical view) and allow them to adjust that which is highlighted as ‘off’ through tweaking current operations (current informed action). At that point, the cycle repeats.

Decisions are made on information and reporting provides that information in summary form. From these reports, decisions are made at all levels of the organization, so the information in each must be directed, in the right amount of detail, and must be timely and accurate.

We look at what ownership’s goals are and work with them in picking the management team best suited to accomplish their goals. Additionally, we help develop the communication channels and feedback loops to enable timely and accurate monitoring of performance.

Simply put, making sure the left-hand knows what the right hand is doing! Communications is the movement of relevant information (economy of a message), in a timely fashion, through appropriately secure channels, to the right destination, for use in their particular function. The direction of the information is best a two-way process so that the message is mutually understood. In larger organizations, the simultaneous movement of information in all directions and the rush for information in ever-more real-time often overshadows the critical mutual understanding via two-way communications that underpin the process of communicating.

Within any organization, the corporate structure (picture an organization chart) is made of the formal structure as in the org chart, and the informal structure that develops over time and the growth of the organization. Often as an organization is growing rapidly, the informal structure grows more from a ‘just get it done’ hack when time and confusion may be hampering the formal structure. Although there is a necessary balance that must be struck between the two, the informal structure exists outside normal channels, so their impact lies in ‘rogue’ decisions being made without accountability.

Comprised of those individuals the owner has put in positions of authority and accountability. The larger the organization, the larger percentage of management that are not owners. The goal is to add managers when and where needed, yet not so many as to grow a non-productive bureaucracy.

The Owner is the one with the most to lose and the most to gain in an organization. The structure of the ownership could be an individual, an LLC, a family, etc. In the normal course, the owner also is critical in planning and oversight in a larger organization, and an increasingly operational role as the organization size decreases.

Organizations are a collection of processes put together to achieve certain goals. The better the processes, the better the chance to reach those goals. We will analyze existing processes, identify issues, and recommend changes. Constant improvement is the only way to gain efficiencies and ensure the organization keeps moving forward.

Business is managed by numbers (like it or not I’m afraid). Goals are set in numbers, progress is measured in numbers, rewards are based on and paid in numbers. The better your numbers, the more informed your decisions are. The ‘Subject To’ portion is the catch: Too much v. Not enough detail; Efficiency & minimizing distraction in collecting data; Wrong data for decision requirements. Encompasses data from Operations, Administrative, Sales, etc. all being combined in the most optimal way to support decision making.

Hiring qualified people requires offering them a ‘qualified’ organization to join. HR: Legal requests met or exceeded. Handbooks, NDA, NCA all up to date, legal, clear & fair? Review process in place? progressive discipline system? Payroll: Done Internally or Service? Modern conveniences offered, such as direct deposit, etc.? General: Paying going rate? Sub-K v. Employee? Benefits package competitive?

Controls are decision points within a process where a mechanism tracking the process can stop or correct the process to meet set standards.

Whatever form an organization’s operations take, key metrics developed to model the processes involved in those operations must be in place, up-to-date, and in line with the goals & objectives set for those operations. As part of a feedback loop, trackers feed data to control mechanisms that can react and cure the process issue.

Successful operations management is the key to any organization’s continued survival and growth. We assist in setting up the necessary operations processes to efficiently produce quality outcomes. As inevitable issues arise, we can support and implement the changes required to run properly.

Operational leaders are the organization’s ears-to-the-ground. They take the goals for operational units that are intertwined with other units and get them working together to meet the goals & objectives further up the chain. Ops Leaders are functioning between management levels above and production resources below, so it is important they’re in appropriate data streams, have controls necessary to implement plans, and are, indeed, good leaders. It is important to every worker that they know what they are responsible for (their tasks), what ‘tools’ they need to fulfill the responsibilities, and see that they have those tools, and what goals they have to meet. The performance of individuals must be measured against the goals their tasks need to meet to stay on plan. As such, individuals must have the same understanding of the goals to achieve, the tasks necessary to do that, and the resources available. Once there is a mutual understanding, the critical metrics by which the process performance and the individual’s performance in making that process work can be set. This forms the concept of responsibilities and accountability.

(With the definition laid out in the Executive/Leadership Section as a preamble.) OpsComm involves the process described above, but contents with more detailed data flow through critical feedback loops so control of the production process can be maintained.

The organization of the different elements of a complex structure or activity so as to enable them to work together effectively. (Webster Def, paraphrased) Seems to fit. Elements relate to tasks at all levels. Departments become Groupings of Tasks that are required to meet their goals. In turn, as things flow up the Org, information turns into summaries of results from and giving feedback to, groupings of DeptGroups. Coordination, at a vision level, is the art of structuring the information that is required for the recipient along with the pipes to move that info efficiently between the parties.
